Grýlukertalagið is an art project collaborated by Chinese artist Wu Shengzhi and Icelandic composer Þorsteinn Sveinsson. During Wu’s Listhus Artist-in-residency period in Ólafsfjördur in Northern Iceland, he attempted to figure out various inextricable connections between the featured Icelandic music, the special natural landscape and lifestyles of local people. Wu is always interested in “translation” and “transformation”. Is it possible to find an approach to translate the language of the nature into music? Wu noticed the array of icicles in different length under the eaves which looked very much like the sound wave, and thus had the idea to interpret them into music. He marked the height of every icicle, and placed them in the stave as the basic melody. With the help of local composer Þorsteinn Sveinsson, the melody was re-arranged and further remixed into the ultimate 3 version of music named Grýlukertalagið, which means the song of the icicle in Icelandic. In this way, the artists are trying to provide an alternative way to understand the unique landscape in Iceland.
